Painting donuts with puffy craft paints is a fun and easy homemade painted wood craft for toddlers & kids. It’s a great way to celebrate National Donut Day with the whole family. But let’s be honest; painted donuts are a relaxing paint project for just about any Sunday crafternoon.
Materials Needed for Painting Donuts:
- Wood Wheels (any size)
- Paintbrushes
- Acrylic Paint
- Wax Paper or Aluminum Foil
- Puffy Craft Paint (optional)
We bought our wood wheels here, they measured 2โ in diameter, but you could go as large or as small as you want with these.
If your using this guide as a paint craft for toddlers to work on, I recommend using the largest size wooden wheels you can find. Also, please make sure you supervise your kids at all times during this project. These easy homemade crafts are meant for parents to do with their kids because family craft time is super important!
Step 1: Lay out a sheet of wax paper or a piece of tin foil, paint your wheels in shades of dough and let them dry
For our painted donuts, we used browns, tans, yellows and even experimented with shiny metallic colors for some extra pizzazz. We waited about 30 minutes for them to dry. We then added a second coat of paint, so that the color really popped.
When I first tried this project, I made the mistake of setting my wooden donuts to dry on a paper plate. This was not ideal because bits of the paper plate stuck to the bottom of my beautifully painted donuts. Using something like tin foil or wax paper will prevent this from happening to you, and your painted donuts will peel up easily.
Step 2: Decorate your donuts
I liked using puffy craft paint to decorate my donuts. I felt like I had more control over the fine details by using a small puffy paint bottle. You may also want to explore different “topping” options like glitter or sequins to decorate your painted donut.
Optional Step 3: Varnish your painted donuts for a clean glossy look
We didnโt have a chance to varnish ours, but you could seal your wooden donuts so that they’re easier to clean later on.
I LOVE the way they turned out. Donโt they look good enough to eat!?
